When a drop of Mary’s blood falls down down down to the center of the Earth, something Evil and Ancient wakes up in the shadows, and now the horrors of the dark have a taste for her. Mary must go on an epic quest through the Nightmares Nine to make a potion to put The Slither back to sleep and save her soul from his gnashing teeth. Scary Mary and the Nightmares Nine is a hilarious and hallucinatory fairy tale that creeps, crawls, and catapults its way through the bizarre landscape of the imagination as Mary fights for her very life amidst the ever-encroaching darkness.

City Arts – ‘Scary Mary and the Nightmares Nine’

In this surreal comedic detective story, the ghost of Hannah’s recently deceased mother returns to haunt the Korean convenience store she once ran with an iron fist, shaming, cajoling, and needling her daughter into avenging her extremely suspicious death. While Hannah’s older brother shirks off familial duties in favor of a romantic tryst with the local dry-cleaning maven, Hannah embarks on an epic mission to piece together the clues that will lead her to Umma’s killer. Featuring a chorus of ajummas and a healthy dose of revenge, Do It for Umma is an absurd tragicomedy about a young woman trying to gain her mother’s approval and protect her family’s honor in the strangest of circumstances.

Spring was so nice we decided to do this twice! Live Girls! presents the return of the Cupcake Readings for a second series in 2013. For our fall series Live Girls! selected 3 new full length plays including work from Joy McCullough-Carranza, Krista Knight, and Emily Feldman and commissioned new short plays from Maggie Lee, Zoey Belyea, Ann Eisenberg, Kelsey Wilke, Kristina Sutherland, Seayoung Yim, and Juliet Waller Pruzan. With intimate readings followed by talk-backs, The Cupcake Reading Series gives audiences a chance to get to know the work of exciting up and coming playwrights as well as an opportunity to be directly involved in the shaping of new plays. And yes actual cupcake will be served!
